Aboriginal Land is Private Land

People need to obtain permission from the Traditional Owners before they are allowed to enter Aboriginal land.

Aboriginal land is private land and traditional landowners have the legal right to grant or refuse permission to enter.

Visitors who plan to enter any Aboriginal land are required to obtain a permit. Permits are issued by Regional Land Councils and must be approved by the traditional owners. Arnhem Land permits are issued through the Northern Land Council in Darwin.

The permit system is designed to protect the privacy of the traditional owners, preserve culture, the natural environment and visitor safety. Permits are generally issued to friends and family of traditional owners or for work purposes but not for sightseeing.
